Florida backed Donald Trump comfortably in 2024, with Trump taking 56.09% of the statewide vote to Kamala Harris's 42.99%, enough to carry all 30 of the state's electoral votes. But that statewide margin tells only part of the story. Tallahassee, Gainesville, and Fort Lauderdale remain three of the most reliably Democrat-voting places in Florida, and that's where Dating Democrat is focused first.

Florida's Democrat vote is not spread evenly across the state, it clusters heavily around the state's two flagship public university towns and a handful of dense, diverse South Florida metro counties. Tallahassee, the state capital, sits in Leon County, home to both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, a historically Black university, and went 60.3% for Harris in 2024, the strongest Democrat showing of any sizable Florida county. Gainesville, in Alachua County, is built around the University of Florida and went 59.4% for Harris. Fort Lauderdale sits in Broward County, one of the largest and most consistently Democrat-leaning counties in the state, which went 58% for Harris.

We chose Tallahassee, Gainesville, and Fort Lauderdale to start rather than simply picking Florida's biggest cities because each represents a genuinely distinct and reliable slice of the state's Democrat coalition, a university-anchored capital, a college town, and a diverse coastal metro, giving members real variety in where and how they connect.

Tallahassee's dating pool is shaped heavily by state government, two major universities, and a sizable legal and lobbying community that clusters around the Capitol. Gainesville's dating pool centers on the University of Florida, one of the largest public universities in the country, drawing students, faculty, researchers, and the medical professionals who staff UF Health's teaching hospital.
